Torque Testing

Torque testing - Click for larger versionWhen tested in simulated clinical conditions, in curved canals of extracted teeth, rotary instruments behavior depends to a great extent on usage parameters.

In order to determine conditions that are likely to cause fracture, working torque (upper lane in panel A) is compared to the torsional resistance of the tips, measured in accordance with pertinent norms (B, C).

The relation between fracture resistance and working torque, specified for a particular instrument cross-section, gives an indication of how fragile a given instrument might be.
