Members of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry's American Student Dental Association (ASDA) chapter recently attended the ASDA Annual Session in Minneapolis, and returned to San Francisco with some national recognition.
The ASDA Annual Session brings together dental students from throughout the United States for various activities including educational lectures, an exhibit fair, social gatherings and an award ceremony. This year, the Dugoni School's ASDA chapter was recognized with a Gold Crown Award for Best Newsletter Content recognizing the Articulating Paper, the school's official student newsletter publication.
The Articulating Paper is a team effort spearheaded this year by Class of 2013 students Sam Liu and Mark Christie. Liu and Christie spent a significant time last fall revamping the format of the publication and moved its distribution to an electronic format. Various students, faculty and administrators are consulted for content purposes, and the newsletter provides a well-rounded summary of information important to students.
Another part of the ASDA Annual Session involves electing district trustees, who serve a one-year term as the official liaison between their local chapters and national ASDA. Danielle Marquis, a Dugoni School Class of 2013 student and the school's current ASDA chapter president, was elected by her peers to serve as District 11 Trustee for the 2012-2013 school year.
In her position, Marquis will represent all California's dental schools, which comprise District 11. She will also become member of the ASDA board of trustees, which consists of the executive committee, eleven district trustees, the editor-in-chief, immediate past president and the speaker of the House of Delegates. The board of trustees is ASDA's governing body and is responsible for the administration and management of the association.
ASDA is a national student-run organization whose mission is to protect and advance the rights, interests and welfare of students pursuing careers in dentistry. More than 87% of all dental students nationwide join the association. At the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, 100% of DDS and IDS students are members of ASDA.
