Dugoni School ASDA Chapter Hosts Second Annual Penny Wars Fundraiser to Benefit Local Charities

Normally, war and dental school do not combine, but this month, students at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry made an exception to the rule when they held their annual "Penny Wars" to raise money for a local charity. The school's American Student Dental Association (ASDA) chapter and student-led community outreach program Pacific Pays it Forward co-hosted the fundraiser along with a food drive.

During the week-long event, students collectively donated hundreds of dollars to City Youth Now, a local organization which helps neglected children obtain medical and dental care. The fundraiser also included food drive donation bins set up throughout the school to benefit the San Francisco Food Bank.

The "Penny Wars" fundraiser challenges students to contribute pennies to their respective DDS or IDS class's change collection, with each penny counting for one point. Students may also add nickels, dimes and quarters to competing class change collections, as these coins count for negative points. The class with the most net points at the end of the week is declared the winner — this year, the DDS Class of 2013 took the win. All the money raised is donated.

"We had a great time with the penny wars and food drive fundraiser this week," said Vinni Oberoi, Class of 2012 and Pacific ASDA community outreach coordinator. "A lot of students participated and we're excited to be able to give our donations to City Youth Now and the San Francisco Food Bank."

This is the second penny wars fundraiser ASDA and Pacific Pays it Forward have hosted to benefit local charities. In recent months, both groups have been busy planning various fundraisers, community outreach events and an on-campus vendor fair, to be held in mid-October.

Pacific Pays it Forward was launched in 2009 by student leaders at the Dugoni School of Dentistry. Throughout the school year, the group offers opportunities for students, staff and faculty at to reach out to the San Francisco Bay Area through philanthropic activities extending beyond the dental community.

ASDA is a national student-run organization whose mission is to protect and advance the rights, interests and welfare of students pursuing careers in dentistry. More than 87% of all dental students nationwide join the association. At the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, 100% of DDS and IDS students are members of ASDA.
