Dr. Sigmund Abelson, an alumnus from University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, has been appointed acting dean of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. Abelson assumed the role Nov. 1 and will remain acting dean until USC completes a national search for a new dean. Prior to his current appointment, Abelson served as associate dean for clinical affairs at the USC School of Dentistry, where he was responsible for the school's clinical operations and lead the implementation of a new clinic model.
A 1966 graduate of the Dugoni School of Dentistry, Abelson is a regent of the University of the Pacific and a member of the Pacific Dental Education Foundation board. In 2002, the Dugoni School Alumni Association honored Abelson with its Medallion of Distinction, the organization's highest honor.
In addition to his role at Pacific, Abelson served as speaker of the house and director of governance, strategic development and component relations for the California Dental Association. He has also been a member of the California Dental Association Council on Insurance and a member of the Los Angeles City Health Care Advisory Board.
"I have known and worked with Dr. Abelson from more than 35 years and am impressed with his commitment to excellence and outstanding leadership abilities," said Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, dean emeritus of the Dugoni School. "I'm confident he will provide the guidance and vision that is essential for one of California's great dental schools."
Abelson is a fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He practiced restorative dentistry in Southern California for 33 years before joining USC as a full-time faculty member in 2002.
