May  31, 2012

Students, faculty and invited guests proudly shared their achievements in the laboratory, dental clinic and community during the 12th Annual Clinical Excellence Day and the 14th Annual Pacific Research Day held at the Dugoni School of Dentistry on May 23.

Excellence Day has become a much-anticipated annual tradition at the Dugoni School, and it provides a venue for students to demonstrate growth and share accomplishments. For the second year in a row, invited participants from Pacific's Stockton campus and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) also attended Excellence Day to present research findings.

Clinical Excellence Day

In the day's clinical portion, students presented case studies and clinical cases on topics such as removable prosthodontics, complex restorative procedures, veneers and implants. Several patients volunteered their time to attend the event and display the work of their student dentists in person. Community service projects and events were also highlighted.

"We were very impressed and excited about the turnout," said Dr. Bernadette Alvear Fa, assistant professor in the Department of Integrated Reconstructive Dental Sciences and co-coordinator of Clinical Excellence Day. "We were happy that so many students took the time to participate in such a fantastic and unique opportunity to showcase their work. We can celebrate their growth over the last two years, learn about their cases, talk to their patients, and see some of the best examples of treatment that took place in our clinics. They made the Pacific family proud."

Groups of dental school faculty members reviewed and evaluated students' cases based on oral and physical presentation, case difficulty, preparation and treatment. Winning presentations will be announced during graduation weekend's Alumni/Graduate Banquet.

Pacific Research Day

For the research portion of the day, students and faculty displayed presentations on a variety of topics including cleft lip and palate, oral cancer treatment, orthodontics and the effect of diet on oral health. Research Day also featured its fourth-annual keynote lecture, given by Dr. John Greenspan, Associate Dean for Global Oral Health at UCSF. Greenspan's lecture was entitled "HIV/AIDS, The Task Continues."

In addition to presenting their research to the school community, students also competed for prizes, including senior research competition awards and the ADA/Dentsply Award, which enables the student winner to attend the ADA Annual Session's Student Clinician Research Program.

Several committees of faculty members selected the winners of the awards below. Additional award recipients, including winners of the senior research competition, will be announced at the Alumni/Graduate Banquet.
