Bay Area Children Have Something to Smile About Thanks to University of the Pacific

Give Kids a Smile student volunteers in Union City.

February  18, 2011

Hundreds of Bay Area families gathered at two University of the Pacific clinics on Saturday, Feb. 5 to participate in Give Kids A Smile®, a nationwide event sponsored by the American Dental Association.  Give Kids A Smile® offered a chance for the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry to partner with local dental professionals to offer screenings, treatment and oral health education to children free of charge.

Through a partnership with the Southern Alameda County Dental Society, dental professionals, residents and other volunteers at the Union City Dental Care Center worked to treat the nearly 50 children in attendance. Throughout the day, they provided screenings and many complex procedures such as fillings, crowns, pulpotomies and extractions.  Attending families also received oral hygiene instructions, free toothbrushes and free entertainment.

The Union City Dental Care Center has participated in Give Kids A Smile® events for many years. Over time it has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of free care to children who participate in the event. This year, nearly 75 volunteers collaborated to make the event a success.

Families lined up early in the morning to receive care, participate in educational games and take home free dental goodies.

The Stockton Give Kids A Smile® event was hosted by Pacific and the San Joaquin Dental Society, and drew nearly 250 volunteers who educated, treated and entertained children. Dedicated DDS and IDS students made the trip from San Francisco to Stockton to work with their Dental Hygiene counterparts and engage the community on behalf of the school's Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) Program.

"The many volunteers, including our dental students and dental hygiene students, were inspiring dental health educators."
