The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry recently hosted Bridge Builders, a festive annual event which celebrates diversity at the school. A variety of cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities make up the Dugoni School family, and Bridge Builders offers an opportunity to spotlight this diversity in a casual environment.
The May 16 evening celebration invited students, faculty and staff to host themed tables that represent their native country, ethnicity or region. Participants provide decorations and share traditional food, drinks, music and customs to represent their country or background. This year, Bridge Builders had more than 20 different tables representing countries such as India, Vietnam and Greece, and U.S. regions such as the Deep South and the state of Wisconsin.
The 2012 Bridge Builders event was organized by Drs. Navreet Randhawa and Abhishek Ruparelia, both members of the International Dental Studies (IDS) Class of 2013. Randhawa is also the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) representative for her class, a role in which one of her primary duties is to help plan the Bridge Builders event.
"I am very excited to have been a part of the Bridge Builders event," said Randhawa. "I'm looking forward to participating next year!"
Bridge Builders is sponsored by ASDA and the associated student body, and tables are generously funded in part by the Dean's Office. Participants also donate their own funds and time to host tables. A special thanks goes to Maria Murtagh from the dental school's Student Store as well as to Dean's Office staff for their help with the event.
