The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry honored Christopher Nelson, class of 2009, with the Good Samaritan Award on Feb. 2. Nelson received a plaque and a $5,000 scholarship during the dental school's annual Over the Hump Party-a celebration to recognize students for completing half of the dental program.
Alumnus and benefactor Dr. Thomas R. Bales established the award in 2004 to recognize a second-year student for demonstrating exemplary kindness to fellow classmates. A committee comprised of faculty, administrators and student body officers nominated Nelson for the honor.
"When I first heard I was nominated for the award, I was very flattered," Nelson said. "There is something special about Pacific that really drives me to help my classmates. Whether it is the supportive faculty, excellent students or many years of tradition, when I walk inside this building, I feel like I'm where I should be."
Nelson received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis. He currently serves as student body secretary and is a volunteer for the dental school's pre-dental simulation course. Nelson plans to work in his father's private dental practice in Redding, Calif., after graduating from dental school.
