Class of 2013 Honored at Commencement Weekend Activities and Celebrations

The Dugoni School of Dentistry family came together in celebration during the weekend of June 14-16 to honor members of the graduating class of 2013. At a variety of commencement activities, graduates spent time with classmates, thanked friends and family, and received their diplomas, marking the successful completion of their dental programs following years of study and clinical practice.

Commencement Ceremony

The school’s 119th annual Commencement Ceremony was held at San Francisco’s Masonic Auditorium on June 16. University President Pamela Eibeck and Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr. addressed the class and conferred degrees upon graduates in the DDS, IDS, AEGD, Dental Hygiene, Graduate Orthodontics and OMFS programs.

IDS Valedictorian Yukti Gulati

Yukti Gulati, IDS Class Valedictorian, spoke during the commencement ceremony.

Kevin Hallgren, the valedictorian of the DDS Class, and Dr. Yukti Gulati, IDS Class Valedictorian, addressed their fellow graduates. Both Hallgren and Gulati ranked first in their respective classes and received numerous honors and awards for scholastic achievements.

Alumni/Graduate Banquet

On Friday, June 14 dental school alumni welcomed the Class of 2013 into the fold of the Alumni Association and celebrated their accomplishments during the Alumni/Graduate Banquet, a festive, black-tie event. Held this year at San Francisco’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel, the event hosted nearly 300 guests who enjoyed cocktails, dinner, awards and dancing.

Dr. Suzanne Saidi ‘91, the current Alumni Association president, greeted the graduates while members of administration presented various awards to graduating students and residents. The event also included remarks from class and student body leaders.

The Class of 2013 also presented their class gift of $30,000 which supports the Pacific Dugoni Annual Fund.

Thanks a Bunch Brunch

At the Thanks a Bunch Brunch at the Fairmont Hotel on Saturday, June 15 graduating students expressed gratitude to family members and friends for their support during dental school. Graduates recognized loved ones with notes of thanks, which were read aloud by the school’s eight group practice leaders, Drs. Mark Abzug, Kalid Aziz, Mark Booth, Des Gallagher, Lisa Itaya, Brian Kenyon, Ai Streacker and Russell Woodson.

Omicron Kappa Upsilon

On the evening of June 15, the Delta Delta Chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) national dental honor society held its annual convocation, at the Olympic Club. Only the top 12 percent of the graduating class are voted into the honor society by current OKU faculty members, who make their selections based on leadership, character and scholarship.

OKU Chapter President Dr. Richard White and Dean Ferrillo inducted the following Class of 2013 graduates into OKU (listed in alphabetical order): Alexander Blaseio, Colleen Buehler, Michael DeFazio, Scott Goldberg, Kevin Hallgren, Allison Hochwald, Brandon Hooper, Peter Ingoldsby, Yukti Gulati (IDS) Linda Kuo, Jamie Leach, Chelsea Liu, Adam Marre, Monika Radke (IDS), Hilma Rodriguez, Benjamin Shimel, Dan Tran and Katherine Wong.

Faculty membership was extended to Drs. Ove A. Peters and Dr. Gabriela Pitigoi-Aron, and honorary membership was extended to Maria Murtagh.

Phi Kappa Phi

With a focus on higher education, Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 and is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary honor society in existence. Admission is by invitation only and requires both superior scholarship and good character as criteria for membership. The name Phi Kappa Phi comes from the initial letters of the Greek words forming its adopted motto: Philosophia krateito photon.

Tau Kappa Omega

Tau Kappa Omega, an honor society in dentistry, was established at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1927 for promotion of honor and service to the alma mater. Students are admitted on the basis of ideals, scholarship and character.
