The International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations named Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., as the organization's 2007-2009 president during its annual meeting Sept. 5 in Dublin, Ireland. Ferrillo will lead the organization in its mission to improve global health by improving oral health.
IFDEA, a global organization consisting of dental educators from more than 900 dental schools worldwide, aims to improve oral health of the public through education, research and community service and patient care.
A key focus of Ferrillo's term as president will be the roll-out of IFDEA's flagship program: The Global Network for Dental Education. The Global Network for Dental Education is a web-based resource designed to share knowledge and facilitate a better understanding of issues of diversity and inequality in oral health care and education throughout the global dental education community. Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, founded the network at the concluding session of the Global Congress on Dental Education III in Dublin in September.
"By connecting the 900-plus dental schools around the globe, we will create opportunities to share knowledge and resource throughout the dental education community that were unimaginable just a few years ago," Ferrillo said. "This will help us to raise standards in dental education throughout the world, and ultimately to improve the provision and quality of oral health care globally."
A long-time dental educator and leader in organized dentistry, Ferrillo became dean of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2006. Prior to joining Pacific, Ferrillo served as vice provost for the Division of Health Sciences and dean of the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He served as president of the American Dental Education Association in 1999 and as chair of the ADEA Council of Deans in 1994.
Ferrillo is a fellow of both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and Baylor College of Dentistry, where he received his DDS degree and specialty training in endodontics.
