Dugoni School Celebrates Holiday Season with Giving Opportunities

December  20, 2010

The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry community has been focused on giving to those in need this holiday season. From late November through December students, faculty and staff donated a significant amount of time, resources and items to those less fortunate, via clothing and food drives as well as involvement with local San Francisco nonprofits.

One Warm Coat

This clothing drive encouraged the dental school community to drop off new or gently worn coats, jackets, scarves and gloves, to be passed along to local charities and then distributed to those in need. Throughout December - an exceptionally cold and rainy month for the San Francisco Bay Area this year - the school community donated over 80 coats and other winter wear which were then distributed to local charities including St. Vincent de Paul, St. Anthony Foundation and Conard House Community Services. Holiday Food Drive

Food donations for the food bankEvery holiday season the school organizes a food drive to benefit the San Francisco Food Bank. Barrels are placed throughout the school for people to drop off nonperishable food items. This year, the school filled four barrels with food, which will go to feed hungry San Francisco residents. Project Open Hand

Students organized a "Pacific Pays it Forward" holiday volunteer event on Dec. 4 at San Francisco charity Project Open Hand. During the day-long event, students gathered to package and prepare food which was distributed to those without money to buy groceries, including many elderly and seriously ill. Project Open Hand has been helping feed underserved populations since 1985. To support this organization, visit http://www.openhand.org.

Project Homeless Connect

Continuing the Dugoni School of Dentistry's involvement with San Francisco's Project Homeless Connect (PHC), the dental school recently completed a second Denture Block, which benefits homeless individuals by providing them with free dentures. Additionally, dental school students and faculty participated in a PHC event on Dec. 8 at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, where they screened dozens of patients and sent those needing immediate treatment to the dental school for care. Secret Pals to Benefit Kids in the Klinic

secret palsIn December, the school's Dental Staff Advisory Council (DSAC) hosted a secret pal gift exchange. For two weeks, staff members gave small gifts to their secret pal, a randomly selected colleague. At the end of the exercise, all secret pal participants donated money in their secret pal's name to the dental school endowment Kids in the Klinic, which provides dental care to underserved children. "Thank you to all who participated in these giving opportunities, and to the students and staff members who organized them," said Dr. Nader Nadershahi, acting dean of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. "Amid all of the other school activities taking place this past quarter, it was remarkable to see these various benefits taking place to help the wider community this holiday season."
