The Developmental Disabilities Councils of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties honored Dr. Allen Wong, assistant professor at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, with the Excellence in Service Award for Health Care during an awards ceremony on June 6. Wong's efforts to improve access to dental care for people with developmental disabilities over the past 18 years prompted the award.
In addition to the award from the Developmental Disabilities Councils, Wong also received several certificates of recognition from the California State Legislature and U.S. Congress, including one from Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Las Trampas, a Lafayette, California-based non-profit organization supporting adults with developmental disabilities, nominated Wong for the honor. Wong, who serves as the assistant director for Pacific's Advanced Education in General Dentistry program, has been instrumental in developing a mentoring program to encourage general dentists to treat patients with special needs.
"Dr. Wong and his team provide on-site dental screening services for our consumers at Las Trampas, as well as providing the majority of dental care for those with developmental disabilities in the Northern California area," said Sandra Jackson, executive director of Las Trampas, in her letter of nomination.
Wong serves as the regional vice president of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, is a diplomate with the American Board of Special Care Dentistry and is the Northern California Coordinator for the Special Olympics Special Smiles ® program. He earned his DDS degree from Pacific in 1986.
