Dr. Berney Neufeld, who oversaw the record-breaking dental school campaign at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, is stepping down as director of Institutional Advancement, as well as from his position as executive director of the Pacific Dental Education Foundation, the dental school's fundraising board, effective February 18, 2009.
Neufeld began his tenure with the Dugoni School in May 2000 as director of Development, where he oversaw the successful "Commitment to Excellence" dental school capital campaign which raised a record $65.7 million, the largest ever for any dental school. He also branded the annual fund to become the Dean's Fund for Excellence, which went on to support several projects including classroom upgrades, the sterilization area and the clinic information system.
In announcing the news of Neufeld's retirement, Dean Ferrillo commented, "All that Berney has done, along with his team, has provided excellent opportunities for the dental school to continue its greatness. We are deeply grateful for his commitment and passion for the Dugoni School." Dean emeritus Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni said that he "raised the bar for all dental schools as to what could be accomplished."
Taking over his responsibilities will be Dr. Craig Yarborough, currently executive associate dean at the school. Yarborough was fortunate to have worked with Dr. Neufeld during the "Commitment to Excellence" campaign. He credited Berney with "bringing the true meaning of philanthropy — a love of mankind — to the Dugoni School. He was able to take the visions of Dean Ferrillo and Dean Emeritus Dugoni, and personally invite our alumni and friends to partner with us, to turn dreams into reality. He defines the role of a professional fundraiser as well as a true friend."
