The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) installed Dr. Steven Dugoni as secretary-treasurer on April 29, 2014 during the ABO President's Dinner. The dinner was held in conjunction with the 2014 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) in New Orleans, La. The other ABO officers are Dr. Paul Castelein, president; Dr. Eladio DeLeon Jr., president-elect; and Dr. Marvin Kastrop, immediate past president. Dr. Dugoni has taught at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry for more than 30 years and is currently an adjunct clinical professor and director of the Mixed Dentition Clinic in the Department of Orthodontics.
"Serving on the American Board of Orthodontics has been extremely rewarding because I have an opportunity to work with extraordinary ABO directors who are dedicated to elevating the level of orthodontic care," said Dr. Dugoni in an ABO news release. "I enjoy examining very talented orthodontists and discussing their quality orthodontic care. As director, I have had an opportunity to visit orthodontic programs throughout the PCSO, and it is very satisfying to see residents and educators working together on preparation for the ABO Initial Certification Examination.
"In the coming years, I look forward to working closely with my fellow directors to promote board certification both nationally and internationally."
The ABO is the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA) and sponsored by the AAO. Through the board certification process, an orthodontist voluntarily undergoes a peer evaluation of his or her orthodontic knowledge and clinical skills. A successful examination is a demonstration to the dental profession and the general public of the orthodontist's pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.
Each ABO director represents one of the eight constituent organizations of the AAO and serves an 8-year term, culminating in the position of president. The ABO directors are responsible for establishing policy with regard to the board certification of specialists in orthodontics. During his tenure as an ABO director, Dr. Dugoni represented the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontics (PCSO).
Dr. Dugoni received his master's degree in orthodontics at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and his dental degree from Tufts University. In private practice since 1981, Dr. Dugoni has been certified by the American Board of Orthodontics for 25 years.
As an active member of the orthodontic community, Dr. Dugoni is involved with many professional associations. He is a past president of Angle Northern California, a component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontics; the PCSO; and the San Mateo County Dental Society. He is also a member of the ADA, the California Dental Association (CDA), the AAO, the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a national dental honor society. He is a fellow of both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. In 2012, the PCSO presented him with its Award of Merit.
Dr. Dugoni is a published author in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Journal of the California Dental Association and Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists Bulletin. He has lectured on orthodontic care both locally and nationally.
