The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry community has been focused on giving to those in need this holiday season. From late November through December students, faculty and staff donated a significant amount of time, resources and goods to those less fortunate via clothing, toy and food drives.
Toys for Tots Toy Drive
The Pediatric Study Club organized a Toys for Tots toy drive, a new giving opportunity for the dental school community. Participants were encouraged to donate new toys to benefit underserved kids via the Toys for Tots Foundation and the US Marine Corp Reserve, which organizes Toys for Tots toy drives nationwide. Students from the study club staffed donation boxes during lunch breaks and helped increase awareness for the toy drive, which raised a total of 115 toys. On Dec. 14 a US Marine visited the dental school to pick up the donated toys. To learn more about Toys for Tots visit: http://www.toysfortots.org/
One Warm Coat Clothing Drive
The One Warm Coat clothing drive invited participants to drop off new or gently worn coats, jackets, scarves and gloves, which were then passed along to a handful of local charities and distributed to those in need. For the second time, One Warm Coat at the Dugoni School was spearheaded by Emilia Segura in the school's Basic Sciences Department. This year the school community generously donated 234 coats and other winter wear to the cause. For more information or to support One Warm Coat, visit http://www.onewarmcoat.org.
Holiday Food Drive
Every holiday season the dental school organizes a food drive to benefit the San Francisco Food Bank. Barrels are placed throughout the school for people to drop off nonperishable food items. This year, the school filled four large barrels with food, which will go to feed hungry San Francisco residents. To learn more about the San Francisco Food Bank, visit http://www.sffoodbank.org.
"Members of the Pacific Dugoni family should feel proud of the generous spirit that sets our school apart, particularly during the holidays," said Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr. "Thank you to all who participated in these giving opportunities, and to the students, faculty and staff members who organized them."
Dean Ferrillo reflected on the spirit of giving in his most recent blog post, "Seek a Cause, Not Applause," available on his Dean's Blog.
