The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry recently hosted a program completion ceremony to celebrate the participants of the school's inaugural Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF) program. The event honored 18 students who successfully completed the RDAEF program, which took place during the past 11 months and required as many as 383 hours of classroom time to complete the program.
The May 6 ceremony featured remarks from Dr. Molly Newlon '82, the program director, and Dr. Craig Yarborough, associate dean of institutional advancement. Students were then presented with certificates of completion and pins by Newlon, Yarborough and Dr. Brian Kenyon, associate professor of integrated reconstructive dental sciences and a regular RDAEF program faculty member. A reception for the students, faculty, friends and family followed the ceremony.
The students are now eligible to take the Dental Board of California certification test, and upon passing will be qualified to provide care under California's recently expanded RDAEF licensure requirements. RDAEFs are trained to complete many procedures which were previously only done by dentists and while the dentist continues to oversee treatment and complete surgical procedures on the teeth, RDAEFs are trained to properly complete many complex tasks.
"I can't wait to utilize my extended duties," said Leann Hass, a student in the inaugural RDAEF program. "Knowing that I can make a difference for my patients, doctor and team is very rewarding. I'm excited to give back to the community and share the wealth of knowledge Pacific has given me!"
Participants who completed the Dugoni School of Dentistry's inaugural RDAEF program are (in alphabetical order): Darling Ampie, Jori Buensuceso, Jocelyn Cook, Klelia Flamenco, Maritza Garcia-Reyes, Malika Greene, Leann Haas, Iramis Kouromenos, Jill Larkey, Kendra Lovitt, Snyder Olivares, David Polishchuk, Carmen Aleyda Rivas, Martha Rodriguez, Jaswinder Singh, Kim Switzer, Rosa Argentina Uriarte and Tatyana Yefr.
"Our RDAEF students have much to be proud of," said Dr. Jane Wright-Hayes, director of the Continuing Dental Education division at the Dugoni School of Dentistry. "At Pacific, we know the effort and commitment required from you to complete this certification program. This is an exciting time and memorable occasion."
The Continuing Dental Education division is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 session of its RDAEF program. The certification program will begin on August 11, and the curriculum will be taught by faculty members from the Dugoni School of Dentistry and University of California, San Francisco. It will take place over a 10-month period on various weekends at the Dugoni School of Dentistry's campus in San Francisco. For more information visit: http://dental.pacific.edu/ce1.
