Living our Vision: Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry Wins Gies Award for Visionary Approach

University President Pamela Eibeck and Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr. celebrate with some of the school's ADEA attendees following the Gies Awards ceremony.

March  16, 2011

Members of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry community recently travelled to San Diego to participate in the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Annual Session and Exhibition, which included 2011 Gies Awards - the "Oscars" of dental education. This year, the ADEAGies Foundation honored the Dugoni School of Dentistry as the winner of the Gies Award for Outstanding Vision - Academic Dental Institution.

Named after dental education pioneer William J. Gies, Ph.D., the Gies Awards annually recognize individuals and organizations for contributions to global oral health and education initiatives. The winners exemplify dedication to the highest standards of vision, innovation and achievement in dental education, research and leadership.

The accolade stems from the Dugoni School of Dentistry's commitment to vision and excellence in many areas including - but certainly not limited to - curriculum enhancements, leadership, community involvement and international partnerships.

The dental school's Pacific Dental Helix Curriculum continues to be a benchmark for a new model of education. Student leadership programs such as the Dugoni Practical Leadership Initiative demonstrate student enthusiasm and dedication to becoming well-rounded care providers. Community partnerships speak to the school's critical ties to the San Francisco Bay Area, while partnerships with dental schools abroad emphasize the school's commitment to growing relationships with international counterparts.

Most recently, the school has focused on exploring the possibility of new facilities that will ensure the Dugoni School of Dentistry remains on the forefront of dental education.

University of the Pacific President Pamela A. Eibeck attended the March 14 ceremony to introduce the award category and present the award to Dean Ferrillo on behalf of the school community.

"This is a tremendous honor for our entire community of students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends," said Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., dean of the school. "This Geis Award tells us that our peers take notice of all that we're doing here in San Francisco. We're encouraged to keep looking ahead and living our vision to lead the improvement of health by advancing oral health. We're deeply honored to receive this award and thank the ADEAGies Foundation for this recognition."

In addition to the school's recognition, Dr. Diarmuid (Derry) Shanley, former associate dean for global affairs at the Dugoni School of Dentistry, was announced as the winner of the Gies Award for Achievement - Dental Educator. Shanley's impact on global dental education includes a 20-year deanship at Trinity College in Dublin and a leadership role in the creation of the International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations (IFDEA).

The Gies Awards are presented by the ADEAGies Foundation, ADEA's philanthropic arm. For more than 50 years, the ADEAGies Foundation has enhanced the oral health of the public through programs that support dental education, research, leadership, and recognition.
