The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry is accepting registrations for its fifth-annual Pacific Dental Hygiene Conference to be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012 at the dental school's San Francisco campus.
With a theme of "Where Science Intersects Practice," this year's conference has been designed for dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants who wish to incorporate the latest scientific evidence in the care of their patients. The conference will feature two science-based sessions to give attendees new information on patient management, making informed care decisions, disease prevention and more.
In addition to the courses, the event will also feature a special ceremony to honor Dr. Cindy Lyon, the creator and first director of University of the Pacific's Dental Hygiene Program. Dr. Lyon was instrumental in developing an innovative curriculum and obtaining accreditation for the nation's first three-year baccalaureate program in dental hygiene.
"The Pacific Dental Hygiene Conference is a great opportunity for hygienists, assistants and other dental professionals to come together and network while also learning about some of the latest scientific information and patient management advice pertinent to their roles," said Deborah Horlak, director of the Dental Hygiene Program at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.
Participants may attend two special sessions offered during the one-day conference:
Targeting Obesity in Dental Patients
This case-based course focuses on empowering oral healthcare professionals to incorporate the latest evidence on the relationship between obesity and the metabolic syndrome and periodontal disease. Attendees will learn about the magnitude of the obesity epidemic; how to implement protocols to screen dental patients for obesity; how to integrate new ideas on obesity prevention; and more. This session will be led by Casey Hein, BSDH, MBA, who has more than 30 years of experience in private practice, education, public health and consulting.
Science Merges with Experience and the Real World of the Dental Office: Make Wise Choices!
This session will give attendees information and tactics to make the best product and patient care decisions in an era of information overload. Attendees will learn how to easily sort through scientific information; how to find objective, non-biased views on products and procedures; how to utilize the web to increase dental knowledge; and more. This session will be led by Amy Hazlewood, RDH, BS, a nationally featured author and speaker who has been practicing clinical hygiene for more than 30 years.
The Pacific Dental Hygiene Conference is designated for six units of continuing education credit. Tuition is $265 for dentists and $185 for allied dental professionals. The program is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m., and will be held at the dental school's 2155 Webster Street campus location in San Francisco.
