Dugoni School of Dentistry’s Fall SCOPE Community Outreach Focuses on Seniors and Youth

November  18, 2011

Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry's SCOPE student and faculty volunteers have screened and treated hundreds of patients throughout Northern California in recent months. SCOPE, which stands for Student Community Outreach for Public Education, is a student-run organization that offers dental student and faculty volunteer opportunities at various community events in the San Francisco Bay Area. Recently SCOPE has participated in the San Mateo Senior Health Fair as well as a San Francisco city-run program, Hoop Summit, geared toward young adults.

The very popular San Mateo Senior Health Fair took place on Sept. 24 at the San Mateo Senior Center. This annual event drew 45 health and wellness vendors — including SCOPE — who gathered to offer free services to nearly 500 seniors in attendance. Dental student and faculty volunteers offered oral health education and screenings to attendees.

Hoop Summit is a program geared toward young adult females in San Francisco. The one-day event, which is organized and funded by the city of San Francisco, taught attendees basketball skills and offered helpful sessions focused on women's health and wellness. SCOPE volunteers hosted an oral health education table at the event and also provided more than 50 attendees with dental goody bags.

The two outreach events offered students a chance to interact with two different population groups who can benefit from dental health education and screening.  Hoop Summit in particular offered SCOPE volunteers an opportunity to interact with young adults, an age range they do not often have the chance to work with at community events.

"Our students have had a particularly busy fall quarter so it's fantastic that they still found the time to go above and beyond to give back to the community at these two exciting events," said Chris Miller, director of community programs, co-director of the Pacific Center for Special Care. "We're looking forward to many more SCOPE activities in the new year."
