Alumni, donors and other supporters of University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry teamed up to raise more than $80,000 to support children's dental services during the 12th Annual "Kids in the Klinic" Golf Classic at the Olympic Club in Daly City, California.
Proceeds from the June 29 fundraiser benefit the school's Kids in the Klinic endowment, which provides funds for essential dental care to thousands of underserved children throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley.
More than 175 people enjoyed an 18-hole round of golf on the Ocean or Lake Course. Ranked as one of the top courses in the United States, the Lake Course will serve as the site of the 2012 US Open tournament, having previously hosted the 1955, 1966, 1987 and 1998 US Open championships.
Following an afternoon of golf, participants bid on silent auction prizes. In the evening, they were treated to a dinner followed by a live auction offering various travel packages, tickets to the PGA Players Championship, a wine country getaway and other donated prizes.
Each year, the school's dental clinics deliver needed care at substantially reduced prices to children who could not otherwise afford it. Dental decay is one of the most common infectious diseases among children and more than 50 percent of California children have untreated tooth decay. Funds from the Kids in the Klinic endowment cover preventative care, treatment for cleft lip and palate, dental restorations, orthodontics and dental education.
Event chairman Steve Mollinelli opened the dinner by expressing gratitude to all of the participants who helped raise money during this year's Golf Classic. He also presented a trophy to the winning team of Dr. Doug Yarris '83, his son Travis Yarris, Peter Pahk and Jerry Johnson.
Dr. Susan Bittner, an alumna of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, founded the Kids in the Klinic Golf Classic in 1997 to raise money for the Kids in the Klinic endowment. Today, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Bittner and many volunteers, the endowment is on its way to reaching its goal of raising $2 million.
"The Kids in the Klinic endowment helps make it possible for our school to provide the best possible treatment regardless of a family's ability to pay," said Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., dean of the Dugoni School of Dentistry. "This fundraising event is very important, especially in this period of economic uncertainty. These contributions help underwrite consultations, restorative dentistry, preventative dental education for children and parents, and many other vital services."
Numerous corporate sponsors contributed to the fundraising event, including Tiret & Company CPAs (Gold Sponsor) and Brasseler USA, Delta Dental, Invisalign®, Mitchell & Mitchell (Silver Sponsors). Tee prize sponsors were Bank of San Francisco, California Practice Sales, Carroll & Company, Gensler, Mechanics Bank, Patterson Dental and Redmond Orthodontics. Hole sponsors were Bank of Stockton, Dr. Edmond Bedrossian, Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., Comerica Bank, Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, First National Bank, Dr. Nicholas Feldman, Thomas Sabbadini, Shore View Dental / Drs. Ahani and Vafi. Key contributors included California Dental Arts, Matsco®, Hass & Associates, PPCLoan and Sacramento Cardiovascular Surgeons.
Ferrillo added, "We thank all of this year's participants, sponsors and volunteers for making an impact on the lives of many families through their participation."
