Largest-Ever Class Gift and "G.O.L.D. Challenge" Fuel Dean’s Fund for Excellence

The class gift is presented during the Alumni/Graduate Banquet.

July  27, 2009

Students, alumni and friends of the Dugoni School of Dentistry recently made significant contributions to the Dean's Fund for Excellence, giving the annual fund additional capabilities to support school projects and innovation.

Graduates of the class of 2009 DDS and IDS programs organized a class gift totaling $30,000, the largest-ever class gift to the school. This donation is organized annually by students during their final year of dental school. Ninety-five percent of the graduating student participated in raising more than $7,000. This amount was generously matched by additional contributions from Class of 2009 parents, the Alumni Association and the Pacific Dugoni Foundation to reach the $30,000 level.

DDS 2009 class President David Goerig and IDS class President Dr. Ahmad Alnatour presented the class gift to Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr. during the Alumni/Graduate Banquet, held each year as part of graduation weekend festivities.

In a separate initiative, the school's graduates of the last decade (aka "G.O.L.D.") reached the group's annual fundraising goal in the inaugural G.O.L.D. Challenge. This program asked all alumni from 1999 to 2009 to consider making an annual gift to the Dean's Fund for Excellence. Nearly one out of four answered his call, as 23% of these recent alumni donated $96,876. This surpassed the original goal of at least 20% participation and a minimum of $84,000 raised.

Several board members of the Pacific Dugoni Foundation personally pledged $20,000 in all-or-nothing matching funds to the Dean's Fund, to be realized only if the G.O.L.D. Challenge goals were reached. Foundation board members Dr. Edmond Bedrossian '86, Mr. Gary Mitchell, Dr. Stephen C. Rose, '79, Dr. Michael Lasky '95, Dr. Jill Lasky '98 and Dr. Scott T. Jacks '74B ended up contributing these matching funds.

"I am so proud of the class of 2009 and our alumni for their commitment to giving back so generously," said Dean Ferrillo. "These donations will make a difference to our school and will help us continue to be an innovative leader in dental education. I am humbled and inspired by these gifts and thank everyone who participated."

The Dean's Fund for Excellence is used by Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr. to address opportunities and challenges as they arise without using student tuition. Mostly recently, the funds were used to purchase the new AxiUm electronic patient records system for use in all of the school's dental clinics.
