May  30, 2014

Months of research in labs at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has resulted in sweet success for dental students. CDA Presents, one of the largest dental conventions in the nation, was held May 15-17 in Anaheim, Calif. and attracted more than 20,000 attendees. At the Table Clinic and Poster competition, dental and auxiliary students, residents and military dentists were invited to present innovative ideas and accomplishments in the field of dentistry. Pacific Dugoni was proud to be represented by nine DDS students who prepared oral and visual media presentations of their research at the Pacific Craniofacial Genetics and Pacific Regenerative Dentistry laboratories. Students were supported by the Research Fellows and Craniofacial Genetics staff.

Jesse HanJesse Han, DDS student in the Class of 2016, won the second place prize in the clinical subcategory for "Prevalence of Malocclusions Among Dental Students."

Meg Hostage and Eric Kim, DDS students in the Class of 2015, won the third place prize in the scientific subcategory for "Mutations in Exons 1 and 2 of PAX9 Gene and Hypodontia."

Only three awards were given in each of three categories (Scientific, Clinical and Community), and winners received cash prizes and other benefits.

"With students from all California dental schools competing, this is always a tough competition, and I am so proud to see our students present their work with professionalism and a deep understanding of their research and its implications," said Dr. Marie Tolarova, professor of Orthodontics and executive director of the Pacific Craniofacial Team and Cleft Prevention Program. "Congratulations to all who participated!"

CDA Presents is held annually in Anaheim and San Francisco, giving professionals in the dental industry an opportunity to exchange updates in clinical and technological advancements, browse extensive exhibit halls, participate in Continuing Education opportunities, network with peers and more. This year's Anaheim CDA Presents focused on the theme, "The Art and Science of Dentistry," and included more than 100 CE lectures and workshops and an exhibit hall floor hosting more than 575 companies spotlighting the latest dental technology.
