The Dr. Thomas R. Bales Family Endowment awarded Christine Phan, Class of 2008, with its Good Samaritan Award on Feb. 3. Phan received a plaque and a $5,000 scholarship during the dental school's annual Over the Hump Party-a celebration to recognize students for completing half of Pacific's dental program.
School of Dentistry alumnus and benefactor Dr. Thomas R. Bales established the award in 2004 to recognize a second-year student for demonstrating exemplary kindness to fellow classmates. A committee comprised of faculty, administrators and student body officers nominated Phan, who is vice president of the class of 2008 and organizer of this year's Over the Hump Party.
"It's an honor to have been chosen by the class as showing the most kindness, especially since so many of our classmates are incredibly generous with their time and effort," Phan said.
Phan, who completed her undergraduate degree at Pacific's Stockton Campus, spent two years conducting research in craniofacial genetics at the School of Dentistry before becoming a dental student. She is a member of Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity, Alpha Chi Sigma and Beta Beta Beta. She hopes to work in a general dentistry private practice in the Bay Area after graduating from dental school.
