Students from the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry will be educating the public about the importance of oral health and providing information about dental services in the community at an upcoming event,“Healthcare 411: Information & Advice about the New Healthcare Law.”
The free event will take place on Saturday, November 23 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the City of San Mateo Public Library, located at 55 West 3rd Avenue in San Mateo.
The event is being sponsored by Congresswoman Jackie Speier in conjunction with Covered California and the City of San Mateo Public Library. It will feature an overview of the state’s health insurance exchange website, workshops with Certified Covered California Educators, a self-service enrollment center with Educator guidance, a Small Business Majority presentation for employers who want information about insurance options for small businesses and one-on-one appointments with Covered California representatives.
As part of a health fair at the event, University of the Pacific dental students from the school’s Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) program will provide oral health information and education to the public.
Other health resources available to the public will include skin cancer screenings from El Camino Cancer Center, nutrition advice from the UC Cooperative Extension San Mateo/San Francisco Nutrition Education Program, mental health and wellness screenings from San Mateo County Mental Health Association, and cholesterol screenings from Sutter Health Mills Peninsula Senior Focus. Representatives from Kaiser, Blue Shield, Chinese Community Health Plan and other organizations will also provide information about health insurance options available to the community.
Members of the public interested in attending the event are asked to RSVP by calling 650.342.0300 or visiting the event’s web page.
Pacific’s dental students have recently been involved in a variety of community health events around the Bay Area including a Diabetes Health Fair at John Muir Medical Center and the O+ Festival at The Center SF. More information about student outreach activities, along with a calendar of upcoming events, is available on the SCOPE web page.
