Three representatives of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry had an opportunity early this month to go behind the scenes of one of the world's largest dental manufacturers to discuss future trends shaping the industry and learn about the latest products and materials in development.
Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., dean of the school; Dr. Ed Bedrossian '86, president of the Pacific Dugoni Foundation (PDF) and associate professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; and Gary Mitchell, a University of the Pacific regent and member of the PDF board recently visited the world headquarters of GC Corporation, based in the Itabashi ward of Tokyo, Japan.
In addition to meetings with corporate officials and researchers, the group also had the opportunity to tour the GC Research and Development Center, where they discussed the possibility for future collaborations, including product development and testing, between the dental school and the company. Makoto Nakao, president and CEO of GC Corporation, graciously hosted a dinner for the group where they further discussed industry trends and developments in various regions of the world, including Japan and North America.
GC Corporation manufactures some 600 types of dental products and materials which are sold in more than 100 countries around the world.
"One of our school's values is innovation and it is always interesting to see some of the latest advances coming out of leading dental companies," said Dean Ferrillo. "It is an exciting time for dentistry with new digital technologies, materials and products, and we aim to stay on the forefront of dental education through collaborations with partners in education and industry alike."
