More than 130 seniors attended the 2014 Senior Smiles Health Fair at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry on April 12. Pacific Dugoni student and faculty volunteers worked alongside community organizations to provide dental screenings, blood glucose testing, cholesterol testing, hearing screenings, educational information and more. Seniors had the chance to discuss health and wellness with representatives from organizations like California Pacific Medical Center's Community Health Resources Center and Experience Corps Bay Area.
"As student dentists, we recognize the importance of learning to address oral health concerns specific to the growing senior population," said Tina Ngo DDS '15, who served as a lead event organizer along with Tiffany Giang DDS '15. "What's wonderful about the Senior Smiles Health Fair is that it provides a wide range of services to seniors and shows that oral health is an integral part of overall health and wellness."
Senior Smiles Health Fair is just one of the many ways that the Dugoni School of Dentistry serves older adults. Dental students also serve the community through the Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) program, a peer-mentoring, student-run volunteer organization with a mission to engage and develop dental professionals committed to improving the health of all people. The Dugoni School of Dentistry has a 20-year tradition of engaging students in community-based services focused on the underserved members of the community. To learn more about SCOPE, click here.
