August 26, 2010
Each August the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry hosts an evening event dedicated to encouraging new students to maintain healthy personal relationships during dental school. Supportive Partners' Night, held at the dental school on Aug. 25, was designed to help first-year students and their significant others with relationship management and school-life balance.
First-year students and their significant others gathered over dinner to listen to dating or married second-year students share advice and suggestions based upon their dental school experiences. Professors also provide suggestions for navigating through school as a couple. Additionally, this event offered a chance for significant others to make acquaintance with new friends, something especially beneficial for couples who have relocated to San Francisco from a different city, state or country.
"Supportive Partners' Night really emphasizes to new students that excelling in school is dependent not only upon excelling in class, but also excelling in their personal relationships at home," said Greg Gardner, Class of 2012 and speaker at this year's event. "This evening helps first-year students to dedicate themselves to focusing on that special person who will support them, and gives their partners a glimpse into how demanding this program really is."
This year's Supportive Partners' Night comes on the heels of the launch of Pacific Dental Families Connect, an online resource launched by Tiffany Blasingame, wife of Eric Blasingame, Class of 2012. Pacific Dental Families Connect is designed to help dental school families and couples network and make connections in San Francisco, and as a way to exchange information about free or low-cost activities in the area.
