The Kids in the Klinic Endowment at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry will receive more than $125,000 thanks to a successful Vino de Mayo wine auction and dinner held on May 8, 2010. More than 200 wine and food enthusiasts gathered at the event held at The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco. The fundraiser supports much-needed dental care, education and oral health prevention to socioeconomically disadvantaged children throughout Northern California.
The event started with a silent auction showcasing a variety of acclaimed wines, as well as destination and dining experiences. Representatives from twelve wineries were on hand to pour tastings for guests. Following dinner in the ballroom, a live auction led by celebrity auctioneer David Reynolds featured items such as a seven-day luxury Caribbean cruise; a wine and dine trip to New Orleans; unique and private access to many vineyards and restaurants, such as a "behind the scenes" evening at Chef Huber Keller's landmark restaurant Fleur de Lys and a farm dinner at the French Laundry orchard in Yountville, Calif.
The Vino de Mayo event helps the Kids in the Klinic program move toward a goal of raising a $2 million endowment to support dental care for children at the school's pediatric dentistry and orthodontics clinics. The clinics provide access to dental care for approximately 1,500 children each year. For many working families without dental insurance, regular care is an unaffordable luxury, and many patients have never seen a dentist prior to visiting the clinic. Each year the clinics at the Dugoni School of Dentistry provide $500,000 of free care and $10,000,000 of below market-rate care for 14,000 patients of record.
Honorary chairs for the 2010 Vino De Mayo event were Julio Bermejo of Tommy's Mexican Restaurant; Anthony Dias Blue, food and wine personality; Master Sommelier Fred Dame; John DeLuca, past president of Wine Institute; Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, dean emeritus, University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry; Executive Chef Gerald Hirigoyen; Executive Chef Hubert Keller; and Congresswoman Jackie Speier. Dr. Michael Fox and Mike Carroll were the event co-chairs.
The event's Titanium Sponsor was Ron Redmond, DDS, and its Platinum Sponsor was Tiret & Company. Gold Sponsors were Bank of San Francisco, Ed Bedrossian, DDS; Carroll & Company; Mechanics Bank, Mitchell & Mitchell, PPC Loan and Reynolds Family Winery.
Numerous board members of the Pacific Dugoni Foundation also attended the event. The Foundation's mission is to ensure that the dental school has the resources it needs to realize its visions and goals.
