"I have long known and respected this dental school for its humanistic model of education and its strong commitment to patient care, research and clinical education."
Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr. understands the importance of family. The dean of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry — the school's eighth presiding officer in its 112-year history — is the son of a dentist who followed in his father's footsteps. "My dad was one of the original endodontists," Ferrillo says, "grandfathered in when endodontics became a specialty in 1963. I owe a lot of who I am to him."
Ferrillo, Jr., a highly experienced and well-regarded leader in dental education, joined the dental school family in July 2006 with more than 30 years of experience. He previously served as vice provost for the Division of Health Sciences and founding dean of the School of Dental Medicine at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Ferrillo's academic experience also includes many years at Southern Illinois University, where he started as a clinical assistant professor in 1978 and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming dean of the dental school in 1987, at age 36. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and Baylor College of Dentistry, where he received his DDS degree and specialty training in endodontics. Ferrillo has taught at Baylor, Southern Illinois and St. Louis University, and is a fellow of both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.
"I have long known and respected this dental school for its humanistic model of education and its strong commitment to patient care, research and clinical education. It has been an incredible honor to be able to work with my long-time friend and mentor, Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, dean emeritus, and with the school's strong leadership team."
Ferrillo is currently president of the International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations, and has served as president of the American Dental Education Association. He has also been active in the American Dental Association and the Commission on Dental Accreditation/Council on Dental Education. Ferrillo also served as chairman of the board of Oral Health America.
He has made more than 50 presentations to professional audiences in the United States, Japan, Thailand and Bulgaria, and he has published scholarly articles in the Journal of Dental Education, the Journal of Endodontics and the American Journal of Dentistry.
